What makes this tuna tartare with avocado and chipotle mayo so special?
Besides this tuna tartare being gluten free, high in protein, and versatile, this tuna tartare is also so easy to make and requires no cooking. Plus, it has layers of flavor coming from:
- Perfectly marinated tuna tartare – the star and key ingredient in this recipe – tuna – is marinated with a handful of ingredients. Just combine the olive oil, sesame oil, soy sauce, grated ginger, green onions, salt, and pepper. Add the tuna and let it marinate while making the chipotle mayo and slicing the avocado.
- Spicy chipotle mayo – optional, but highly recommend. A five-ingredient sauce that’s just lemon juice, minced garlic, olive oil, chipotle chiles, and salt. Just mix these ingredients together. Add a teaspoon of water if needed to achieve the desired consistency. If you’d prefer a healthier approach or don’t like mayo – I know it’s a thing! – use greek yogurt. The flavor might change a bit, but the consistency will stay the same.
- Sliced avocado – another optional topping, but highly recommend. There’s something about tuna tartare with avocado that just makes it the perfect combo.
These are the exact ingredients I use to make my perfect tuna tartare with avocado, but you can always taste and adjust to make it your own!
How to make tuna tartare with avocado
First things first: be sure to get a good quality tuna from a reputable store. The tuna we’re looking for must be sushi-grade tuna, have a light pink color, and have no fishy smell.
We are essentially cooking our tuna in citric acid: lemon and orange juice. The acidity in the lemon and orange juice creates a chemical reaction that breaks down the protein in fish, the same way cooking does.
Using a really sharp knife, dice the raw tuna and add it to a medium-sized bowl. Add in the tartare ingredients minus the lemon and orange juice, and mix. The hint of sesame oil is what brings this dish together. It honestly has all the flavor, you could ever want in a recipe – it adds depth and creaminess.
In the meantime, prepare the chipotle mayo. Add all the mayo ingredients together in a small bowl and mix until well combined.
Perfectly slice your avocado by using a sharp knife to cut the avocado lengthwise. Twist each half in opposite directions to open. To remove the pit, carefully whack the seed, gently turn the knife, and lift the seed. Place the avocado halves cut-side-down on your cutting board. Peel using your fingers, the skin should peel right off. Using a sharp knife, slice crosswise for short pieces or lengthwise for longer pieces.
Going back to our tuna tartare, add lemon and orange juice.
Have your toasts or crackers ready, add a layer of tuna tartare, then add the sliced avocados, and drizzle some chipotle mayo on top.
What can I serve this with?
Serve this tuna tartare with avocado with plantain chips, crackers, or spread on toasts.
